Book reviews for kids can help narrow down the humongous reading pile.

Picture this – You’re a book lover. Always have been. Always will be.

In fact, you want to pass on this love of books down to your own children, then your children’s children. However, there must be a billion children’s books on the market today, and that’s only from the last few years! Books get churned out and published day in, day out and and finding the right one can be a real pain in the neck. (I’m sure many parents can relate!)

“What is right for my child?”

“Will my child be interested in this?”

“Is this a book that my child can learn valuable life lessons from?”

“How quickly would my child get bored of this book?”

These are some of the questions you might ask yourself while at the library or while at a book store. At first glance of a book, you can’t always tell what’s beneath the cover. That’s why book reviews for kids (and their grown ups, might I add) are crucially important. They give the reader a better insight of what to expect from a book as well as helping out the author, too.

Book reviews for kids – from an author’s perspective.

I was always a keen reader as a child. When you’re passionate about something, it stays with you for life. Over the past few years, it’s really occurred to me how important it is for an author to get reviews, for a number of different reasons and in a number of different ways.

A couple of years ago, I wrote my own children’s story, Little Caroline. Since then, it’s been locked away from prying eyes, but now, the time where I’m looking to publish, I want more people to read it. Even more importantly, when it is published, I’ll be actively seeking kids book reviews for my own book!

The thing is, reviews mean absolutely everything to an author. Without them, it’s incredibly difficult for them to get the word out about their book. Shoppers look for Amazon and GoodReads reviews (to name a few) to decide which books they should go for – without a good enough rating from multiple reviewers, getting someone to buy your book is nearly impossible. Unless, of course, you count your mum and her friends, which don’t really give you a clear, true rating, unfortunately!

Kid’s book reviews – from a reader’s perspective.

Is your child picky? Does your grandchild pick and choose what they’re interested in week by week? It can be so hard to find confidence in the right book. Granted, you can go against the saying of, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, and ACTUALLY judge the book by its cover. Or, you can have a quick flick through while you’re stood in the middle of Waterstone’s, the sales assistants breathing down your neck, forcing a sale onto you when you’re not quite ready.

Let’s be honest, knowing what you want BEFORE you set foot in a book store could save you an awful lot of time. But how on Earth do you know what to look for if you’ve never seen the physical book?! That’s where reviews come in. Simply search for book reviews for kids books online, or browse Amazon and GoodReads to find those that are age or theme appropriate.

If you’ve seen a book that you’ve liked the look of in a store or online and you want to research it further before you commit to buying, then a book review is the great place to look. There are so many fantastic book bloggers around these days who are easily searchable online and through social media, who are recommending books and sharing their children’s book reviews all over the web. All you need to do is look for them!

The verdict.

If we’ve still got to ask the question, “How Important Are Book Reviews For Kids?” then maybe you should start reading this post again! Quite simply, they are a godsend for an author, and also make the lives of a parent, grandparent, uncle, auntie or sibling so much easier (especially when there’s a birthday or gift giving event coming up!)

Readers and authors are in the big reading/writing loop together. The author helps the reader to find something they love and enjoy reading, and the reader helps the author out by dropping them an honest review – we can all do our part, and I’m here to do just that.
